WORKED WRITING EXAMPLES

The following creative writing examples show how you should approach the writing exercises.
Each writing example  gives a clear idea of how much or how little is expected.
Please don't think: "More is better. " We have only a limited time to devote to each student and wish to be fair to all.  Over-long answers become a burden.
 Writing Example for Question 3.

Take one of the opening paragraphS given and use it as a writing prompt to suggest some characters and a plot.

In order not to spoil the examples you have been given, I'll construct a new one for this example.

Even though no one could overhear what took place in her office, Paula leaned forward and whispered: "So, how long do you think this has been going on, Allie?"

Allie shrugged. "Maybe a month."

"Right under my nose!"  Paula sniffed, as if to emphasise the point. "Well, I appreciate you bringing it to my attention.  I'll have to deal with this."

OK. My take on this is that Paula  could be  the owner/manager of, say, a chain of  expensive  fashion boutiques.  Allie is a junior employee - a sales assistant  -no, maybe she just packs goods in the warehouse to send to the various stores.  Perhaps she's discovered that an older and trusted long-term employee has started  moving hundreds of dresses out of the warehouse without any invoices.  She sees large boxes being loaded into the back of said employee's van each night.

Possible plot lines: Maybe all is not what it seems. Paula is going broke.  She has ORGANISED the employee to syphon off the most expensive  stock and is going to burn the warehouse and claim insurance. [Maybe this isn't big enough ...might have to think of a bigger crime].  Because Allie has revealed she knows something, she is in danger,  This could lead to - someone tries to run Allie down one night, so she decides to investigate on her own...etc etc.  Could she end up findinga body in the warehouse?  Whose?

THIS IS ALL OR MORE THAN IS REQUIRED. NOTHING HAS TO BE COMPLETE - LEAVE LOOSE ENDS.  WE'RE NOT AFTER CREATIVE WRITING EXAMPLES OR EXAMPLES OF GOOD WRITING.

Writing Example for Question 4.

Take a visual prompt and see what plot ideas it sparks.

Again, I've taken a completely new photo.... Out of interest, the photo is of a wax figure in the wonderful display rooms at Warwick Castle in England,

MY ANSWER:

This is Sir Reginald Dwyer.  He is getting dressed for dinner.  His guests include his Lordship, Bishop Morris; a retired colonel with a love of chess; a woman who dabbles in crime writing ...the name Miss Marple somehow springs to mind- and ...well, several possible suspects, because the Bishop is murdered most foully that night.  Who would want to bump off a bishop?  When a lowly footman is killed Miss M warns Sir Reg his knighthood puts him in danger ...he could be next...  someone is playing a sinister game of chess.

Writing Example for QUESTION 5.

This question asks you to further the plot of the killer-father meets  son at Lightning Ridge scenario.

To show you what is expected, I will use as an example the paragraph about Old Bill on his zimmer frame.

YOU MAY USE POINT FORM, IF YOU LIKE.

MY ANSWER:

Let's suppose that the newspaper tells the world that Bill fathered an illigitimate daughter back in 1960.  Bill tackles the paper's editor who says the info came in an anonymous letter from out-of-town and he couldn't resist putting it in,  After hitting the editor  over the head with his zimmer frame, Bill sets to work trying to establish the source of the mischief.  The letter was posted in XXXX, a place Bill had never been.  He did have a brief fling (as a married man) in 1960, so tracks down Maisie, the lady in question, in another city.  She denies all knowledge of the letter and denies ever having had an illigitimate child.  Something in her voice makes Bill suspicious.  He does some investigating and discovers there WAS an illigitimate child born to Maisie around that time. PLOT TWIST PLOT TWIST, Lots of things happen and then Bill finds that it is his daughter who sent the letter to make him track her down...and they both live happily ever after.  OR, Billl's new daughter turns out to be his favourite busty porn queen... and it puts him off videos for life.
